Island of Zaratan


Do you need a machine that you can not build yourself? Well the logical place to go if it is mechanical has to be Zaratan, a small island about twenty miles south-west of Changeval where many a Gnome has found a home.
The island measures only 40 by 50 miles, but enough knowledge has been gathered there to create most machines a adventurer or any one else could wish for.


Movement

As the island is about 50 miles across, on a good road, you should be able to reach the other side in a fairly long day riding a light horse.
Well there are excellent roads on this island, but they are not that straight. Most roads will allow two carts to pass each other, but taking a cart from east to west will take at least five days.

Geology of Zaratan

Zaratan is an island that has some high mountains and rather large areas of hills. The gnomes have created their houses in five wooded areas in these hills.
Next to that, two city's where build, where a lot of shops and workshops are located. Some Gnomes have a second house here. The city's are there to welcome the people that come to Zaratan to trade.

Political situation

The faith of Garl Glittergold or maybe in him is very strong on the island. Clerics of Garl Glittergold teach the children, but also run the island.
The clerics elect a president from the leaders of the families and also appoint the delegate to the great council.

Crime and Justice

Gnomes do not like glimmering stuff to be stolen, but they do not mind being the victim of a prank pulled by someone else. In general one might say that gnomes tend to have little use for crime and justice as most of their homes are more then well hidden.
The times that justice needs to be decided, the clerics of Garl Glittergold help out.

Magic

Arcane magic comes natural to gnomes, so they have no problems with that at all, though they tend to prefer magic of the Illusions school.
Divine magic is rather normal as well, as long as it is divine magic from one of the domains that Garl Glittergold supports.
Psionic powers are regarded with more then just a bit of superstition, though curiosity remains a important trait with gnomes.

Revered gods

The only god that is allowed to set foot on Zaratan is Garl Glittergold, though the dead gods Anubis and Nephthys are generally in charge of leading the dead to their new home.

Main population

The only race that lives on Zaratan is the race of Gnomes.

Economy

Zaratan has not many needs, but iron, jewelry, minerals and precious stones are the main imported materials. In return Zaratan exports technology in the form of machines, constructions and also sometimes in the form of books and the like.
