Tivanil

Seeking shelter from a violent storm, we landed on the island of Tivanil. Not many a visitor comes here, as most of the shops, taverns and other merchants ask outrageous prices for every service you can think of. The only thing that goes cheap, is the export of food, which seems to be plentiful on this island.
At first, the prices surprised us and made us wonder how all the locals could afford such prices, until we found out about the platinum and silver mines that are located near the north-western shores. Needless to say that there is plenty a jewelry shop in the capital called Molarqui.

Movement

The island measures around three days travel from east to west, while north-south takes around two days. This is assuming you take a light horse, so your traveled distance each day reaches to around fourty miles.

Geology of Tivanil

Tivanil is a island that is a rather flat island, save for the north-west corner, where there is some very rough mountain ridges. In the middle of this area, there is a large tower, around which the silver and platinum mines are located.
The remainder of the island is flat grasslands and farm land, or lightly to heavily wooded area. Most of the lumber is used in the mines as support beams and the like.
The only place where it is possible to harbor is ship is in the eastern bay area. This is partly because it is not unusual that storms rage around the southern and western shore.

Political situation

With four main groups of population, there are many different views on how the political situation should be. For the last ten years there is sort of a truce in this area, but most expect a new break-out of political turmoil in the next few years.
For now the dwarves in the mines follow their king, who sends a representative to the political council in Molarqui, the capital. The Halflings have no say in this council, as they have declared themselves as a independent state. The humans have representation thru democratically chosen city councils, while the gnomes have organized in guilds, who send representation to the political council.
The political council is supposed to be responsible for enforcing justice and the foreign policy, but in reality it has little or no say in what happens on the island. The only importance of the council is the fact that it is responsible for sending a representation to the great council of Teolin, housed on Mercantie.

Crime and Justice

In the dwarven mines, there is no question about crime or justice.... If you know dwarven halls, you have seen the system that is enforced here as well.
In the forests, justice is enforced by the Halflings, who are not too fond of having people imprisoned. Here you can get away with just about anything, it is just that once you leave the island and check your pockets, you will notice you have paid the fines. The terms and conditions of these fines seem to be set by some secret Halfling council, who will go thru great pains to enforce the punishment....
In the city's of gnome and men, justice is carried out by (mostly) human sheriffs, who are paid by the gnome guilds.
Generally speaking one can say that if you behave the way you would expect of good house guests, you will get in little or no trouble, but depending on where you find yourself, when breaking some obscure local rule.... You might be in for a heap of trouble.

Magic

The mines of Tivanil are not a good place to wield magic, while the forests will not react to kindly to arcane magic. On the other hand the city's are not quite the center of divine magic. In short.... only use the magic the inhabitants of the area use and you will be fine...

Revered gods

With such a diverse population, it is clear that there are many gods that find a home on Tivanil. In the woods there is a preference for following Tyche, while the mines is the area you would find temples of Hephaestus. In the city's and villages of humans and gnomes, we have seen many a temple of many a different god. Examples include Athena, Hermes, Moradin (The first ever time we saw great numbers of humans follow this god.) and Sobek.

Main population

The island is inhabited by a strange mixture of races. Many a dwarf lives near or in the mines. Many a human merchant lives in the capital to trade the farmland products, silver and platinum, while the city also houses many gnomes who can afford to buy expensive tools to create even more expensive equipment.
On the other hand, the villages in the woods house many Halflings, who make their living tending the forests and selling lumber to the mines.
All in all this is part of the reason why the political situation on the island is so fragile.

Economy

The main export products of the island are silver, platinum and food. With such a rich supply of each of these products, it should come as no surprise that also jewelry is a important export product. To create this jewelry, large quantities of precious stones are imported, along with plenty of ale, wine and other alcoholics.
With such a rich economy, it comes as no surprise that most prices you pay, are somewhat above what you might be used to on other islands.
Last but not least there is a small shipyard, but this is mainly used to repair ships that have been damaged by the storms that frequently ravage the north and eastern shores.

Map of the islands

The map here is but a small version. We suggest you save the larger version that you will get to see when you click on the image. Especially when your goal is to use the map in your further exploration.
