Island of Sindlahe
Sindlahe is not a island that we have visited as such. Again one of the adventurers was responsible for telling us about Teolin. This time it was Kethae, who told us about the island. He has not been able to provide us with a decent map, but the general information about the island seems reliable enough to publish here.
The island used to be a relative quiet island, where humans and elves lived side by side in a very peaceful way. However after dwarves set foot on the island, they started to mine away some hills right from under the houses of the humans. The elves where very worried that one day the dwarves would also mine away the forest and so they supported the humans in fighting the dwarves. Now that the dwarves have been thrown of the island, the humans feel over confident and threaten to burn down the forests. It is needless to say that since this threat has been voiced, the elves and humans now live on the brink of war.
It is a shame really, because the island is big enough to support both populations, measuring a little over forty by a hundred twenty miles.
Movement
Most of the island is overgrown with forests, planted by the elves on a rather hilly island. In these parts, movement is very slow, as there even are hardly any roads. The roads that exist, are so small, that you can only walk single file and often horses and other animals will find the path's too small to walk. Typically humans will travel no more then twelve miles.
In the human settled part of the island, traveling is very easy. Even by cart it is easy to travel around sixteen miles a day.
Geology
The island is mainly a collection of rolling hills. Most of them are not very steep, but some of them have pretty sharp sides to them.
The hills are composed of a combination of sandstone and limestone, covered with very fertile ground. Originally the island used to be a barren desert, but with patience, tinkering and knowledge of nature, the elves have transformed this island in a green lush place.
Political situation
Since ever the dwarves have set foot on Sindlahe, there has been a difficult situation between the elves and the humans. However since the dwarves have been driven of the island, the situation is approaching all out war.
The humans have now settled for a clan-democracy system with a strong president, who is only advised by the clan leaders.
The elves have stuck to their old system of a monarchy. However next to the monarch, a strong war-cabinet has been formed.
Due to the internal tension, the representation of Sindlahe in the great council on Mercantie has been suspended.
Crime and Justice
War is on the brink of breaking out between humans and elves. This has lead to some severe measures on both sides. The sheriff or law enforcers have pretty much been abolished and replaced by military. As a result, justice is enforced extremely quickly, but sometimes perhaps a bit too quick to be fair and just.
Magic
Elves have had a fondness for magic ever since there is record of them. Arcane magic finds a warm welcome amongst them. There is a notation that currently research in this area has been focused a bit more on combat oriented spells.
Among humans, divine magic has taken root, the last couple of years and arcane magic has been declared unwanted three years ago. Last year this form of magic has even been banned as being a weapon of the enemy.
Revered gods
The revered gods depend strongly on the area where you find yourself. Humans revere Nike and Hera. Elves seem to favor the nature god Obad-Hai.
Main population
The northeastern shore is inhabited by humans mainly, while the rest of the island is dominated by elves.
Economy
Sindlahe was most famous for it's elven-masterwork instruments that used to be exported very, very rarely. However since the latest wars between humans and elves, trade has been little more then a trickle.
The dwarves where famous for exporting some very rare ore's from the island, but this export has stopped as well, since the dwarves no longer live on the island.
Humans tend to export worked metals, but only in small quantities.
Due to the export coming to a halt, the import has stalled as well and now the only trade relations that are kept at a reasonable level are the arrangements where ships come to Sindlahe to find fresh supplies.
