Island of Simor

Halflings are known for their taste in wines, good food and good tobacco. Simor is no different in this, although the tobacco industry seems to lead a dwindling half-life, the cooking industry is known across a large part of the central and western areas of Teolin.
Many have gathered from all over Teolin to spend shorter or longer periods of time on the island and there now is a regular ship service between Mercantie and Simor, simply so the various representatives can enjoy a splendid meal on this rather large island.

Movement

Simor measures a little over one hundred by one hundred miles with various ports along the shores. Due to the increased travel needs of the various tourists on the island, roads have been paved along this island by dwarves from Osterdivan.
To accommodate travel even more, various regular couch services are available and in many places it is possible to rent horses or pony's. As such travelling from one side of the island to another is usually not an endeavour that will take very long. On average one would take around three days.

Geology of Simor

Most of this island is covered in rolling hills. It is just the southern rim of the island that has some high rising peaks and sharp cliffs. It seems most of the island was formed by early volcanic activity and the southern expansion of the island was the result of a meteor striking fairly close to the already existing island.
Simor is a fairly fertile place, but in the last five century's, farming and other land activity's have been slowly replaced by cooking and other tourist centred activity's. This has led to a situation where many overgrown fields are slowly turning into forests and other wild land areas.
Along the roads the fences and meadows are well kept, so people may enjoy a leisurely picnic along the way.

Political situation

Halflings tend not to mind too much about others business and most of the problems are solved over dinner or another meal, a drink or if time is really short and the matter very light, it might be discussed over a pipe.
The Maryford family sort of tries to control matters and thinks they rule the island, but that is only as far as you could rule a Halfling society. They do keep a keen eye on Mercantie and since none of the other family's likes to raise the issue, the Maryford family sends representation to Mercantie.

Crime and Justice

With the invasion of tourism over the last five century's, Simor has been forced to set up a justice system. Most of the Halflings know they are too lazy and too easy going to really involve themselves with justice and so judges and barristers of The Bar travel he island to rule in disputes and other matters.
As for finding criminals, that is another matter. The Tallfoot family has been doing research in criminal matters for over four century's now and so around two century's ago they have been appointed the official police force of Simor by the Maryford family.

It is important to note here that there are very few official laws on Simor, but justice is spoken based on common sense. There is one official law that is enforced rather strict though, the law on export of Simorian wine.

Magic

Halflings are not so magic minded at all, they prefer a good pipe, a good drink and above all, a good or excellent meal. As such, there are not many that practice magic in the lands of Simor. This does not mean magic is despised, but it is rather unknown.
Many will gather for a nice show of fireworks and also magic involving the creation of food, drink or tobacco might expect a warm welcome. Most other magic is simply ignored, unless people get hurt of course.

Revered gods

We have been looking far and wide, but the only gods that are revered on Simor seem to be Tobacco, Drink and Food.

Main population

As for permanent inhabitants, this islands main population makes this a Halfling island. However all the people that visit the island for shorter or longer periods of time, make it easy to encounter dwarf, humans, elves, gnomes and even the occasional Half-Orc on this island.

Economy

Due to the many people visiting this island known for its excellent cuisine and the fact that most of the Halflings these days seem to look down on the simple work of growing crops, catching fish and raising cattle, Simor imports many, many different types of food.
As most now look down upon manual labour so much, the export from Simor has come to a total stop. This does not mean the island is rapidly loosing perspective and funds. The import balance is still positive due to the many visitors that come to stay at the various hotel and other accommodations and most important to taste the excellent foods for which Simor is known.

Note that Simor still produces wine, but export limitations are severe, due to the lower production in recent years. The current law prohibits export of more then one gallon of wine per person. Per ship leaving the island, no more then seven people may carry wine in their luggage. Guards often check ships for this before leaving and punishment is severe.
