Island of Mergany
Once a true companion, now a true friend of mine rules the island of Mergany. Shortly the story of Delora is a simple one, she accompanied us on our adventures and one day we found ourselves stranded on the island of Mergany. The island was in disarray, because the King had just died and no heir was available.
We where asked to revenge the dead of the king, but we felt to busy to answer this request. In the end Delora decided to lead the quest, guiding some locals to victory over the pirates that attacked the capital and killed the king.
Since the island now was without a leader, Delora was asked to take this position. She decided that she did not want to be queen, but she did accept the office.
The island of Mergany measures around 50 by 100 miles and is sort of dedicated to the god of Heironeous. The main group of inhabitants of the island is formed by the guild of "The Nexus of Heironeous". Only Paladins and Clerics are allowed to join this guild, but this is one of the few guilds that allow others to live on their grounds. Well not many guilds are found on such large islands either.
Movement
To travel the island from north to south you need to cover 50 miles. On a good, solid road this would take around two (long!) days on foot, but on a light horse, you would need just one (long!) day.
Geology of Mergany
High cliffs surround the Western, Southern en Eastern rim of the island. No possibility's to land on the island exists on those sides. The Northern rim of the islands is made up from low rolling hills, which gradually flatten out into meadows and glens. However the hills also spring up into high mountains.
The inner area of Mergany is therefore made up of meadows, flat lands and glens that are divided by ridges of hills and mountains of various heights.
Political situation
What do you want to know? The official version or the practical one?
Officially the ruler is almighty and therefore Delora may decide on anything.
Even if the ruler is not the head of "The Nexus of Heironeous", he will not be able to decide against the wishes of this order, as it is the only military or armed organization on the island
In everyday life each village has a council chosen by the inhabitants. This council is responsible for the day to day maters that arise in the village, hamlet or city. For every five hundred inhabitants of the island, there is a representative in the Senate of the island. The Senate resides in the capital Biloral and meets every second week of each month to discuss the maters on hand. If needed, extra sessions are scheduled. The Senate appoints a government that does the everyday ruling of the island. Delora is the chairwomen of the government and has a strong voice in appointing its members.
Besides ruling the island, Delora is also the leader of the order of "The Nexus of Heironeous". This is however a strict hierarchical organization, where the members of a level appoint new members from the lower level. Delora was asked to lead this guild, as she proved very important for the island and also is a dedicated follower of Heironeous.
The main monastery of the guild is located in Biloral, but many other monastery's exist as well. Every village of at least 50 people has a monastery with at least 10 occupants.
Crime and Justice
The island of Mergany is filled with lawful good people, so no excuses are accepted to explain why a crime was committed. The law is enforced by the Clerics and Paladins of Heironeous.
Magic
The preferred forms of magic are all sanctioned by Heironeous, this means that all magic not from the Good, Law, or War domains is regarded with suspicion. The use of arcane magic is strongly discouraged because of this.
This however does not mean that arcane magic or magic from other domains is forbidden. The only magic that is forbidden is magic from the Evil, Chaotic and Necromantic domains.
Revered gods
The only god that is followed on Mergany is Heironeous.
Main population
The islands main population is made up of Humans (80%) and Half-Elves(20%). This however is not true for the population of "The Nexus of Heironeous". They are from all races with a variable percentage, but they all are Paladins or Clercics of Heironeous.
Economics of Mergany
The currency of Mergany is the gold piece. The main cash flow into Mergany is derived from "The Nexus of Heironeous", as the members of this order are often asked to perform all kind of services that involve battle. To put it bluntly, they are often welcomed as mercenary's.
Mergany is rather self sufficient, safe for many luxury goods that are imported. However the prices for these goods are not very different from normal. (Weapons and armor are not imported very often.)
Special
All those who are of evil or chaotic neutral alignment are not permitted to set foot on the island, unless there is a form of emergency why they should land on Mergany.
