Island of Changeval

For most travelers that come from the east and are on the road to Mercantie, Changeval is the last harbor to visit.
The island is a place to re supply and to trade with the underwater people. The folk that live below the seas are not represented in Mercantie and hate to go there, so they come to Changeval to do their trading.
Rumor has it that below the waves there actually is a rather large city where aquatic elf and merfolk live together.
Besides the trade, the island has little to offer, as it is only about 40 miles in diameter and the middle 25 miles are not quite inhabitable.

Movement

Traveling 40 miles would take about a day for a rider on a horse and about two days on foot, but traveling from north to south in a straight line is quite impossible on the island.

Geology

Changeval is originally a volcano. A meteor struck the north-east corner of the island and quenched the volcano.
Most ships do not enter the central bay area, as it is way to deep to anchor, but on a stormy night, it is a great refuge of course. Fortunately not many a storm rages around the island.
The woods on Changeval are all production woods, where trees are just a resource that is used to repair ships that anchor near the island.

Political situation

The people of Changeval have started out with a pretty democratic system, but by now the trade federation is in control of all major political decisions. The members of the trade federation are all wealthy merchants and shipyard owners, who pay a annual fee of 500 gp to be part of the federation.
To be part of the select group who runs the federation, a annual fee of 1000 gp must be paid. Currently this group consists of seventeen people.

Crime and Justice

The federation pays guards that investigate and punish crime. On the other hand, a island that sees so many visitors, is bound to have crime....

Magic

Magic is not an issue on Changeval, as long as it does not influence trade. Using magic to have your goods appear better then they are, will be severely punished.

Revered gods

Some gods are revered here, like Apollo, Zeus, Irtolie and even some others.

Main population

The main population is made up of humans, although many other races have been known to settle here for longer or shorter periods of time.

Economy

Changeval is a trade community, where the world beneath the waves and above the waves meet. Due to the protected bay, the island is ideally suited for this.
Besides this, the island has a nearly regular ferry service with Mercantie, making it a great last stop for travelers in that direction.
Since so many ships dock here on their journey to other parts, every piece of available land is used as farm land. Either to grow food or to grow trees that in turn are used to repair ships that arrive near the island in less then splendid condition.
The shipyards do also build small vessels for use in the waters around the island, but no fishing boats are build, as it is cheaper to buy fish from the "be-lowers".

Nearby islands

Nearly next to the island, just about twenty miles south-west of the island, you stumble upon the island of Zaratan, where gnomes have set up shop. This island is a special boost for the trading options of Changeval, as many people go to Zaratan to buy technologies or have special stuff build for them.
