How Teolin came into existence
To fully understand how it is possible that Teolin is so divided into different factions and cultures, to understand how Teolin came to be more water then land, we had to dig through history and library's in a way that would deter most people form ever looking at any book again. That knowledge is important for the bold who wish to venture into this world. To prevent you from making the mistakes we made, you might consider reading these pages.
Many, many, many years ago, thousands of years ago even, Teolin was formed from the dust and debris and large amounts of frozen water circling around what seemed to be a single star. Many a mile from this star, that we now know to be a double star called Larsol, a large clump slowly clustered together. During this clustering period, not many meteors struck the slowly forming planet. Since the planet was forming so far away from the star system Larsol, the planet that formed had a smooth surface. The cold and the dust made sure that while the inner core of the planet cooled down, the water slowly sank down and the surface became a dusty, dry place.
Many a year passed and time seemed to have forgotten about this barren, dry planet, until one day meteors seemed to home into this planet. Massive blocks of material plummeted deep into the hart of the planet, that was nearly destroyed by the avalanche of debris. The meteors slowly but surely pushed Teolin out of its orbit and moved it to a position much closer to the double-star system. This made sure that the water inside the planet started to melt and resurface. Besides that, the meteors that struck Teolin, consisted of water as well. Some even contained as much as 95% water.
The result of this was that in a short period of about two hundred years, this barren dry block of stone turned into a gigantic bubble of water. While this happened, the inner core of the planet started to react again. The tectonic plates started moving again. These tectonic plates collided together forming huge mountains. But with all the water around, only the very tops of the mountains are visible above the water. The tectonical shift also gave the possibility that volcanoes started working. Some of these rose high enough to form islands as well. As this happened, the universe decided it was time for making life simple for our planet, the bombardment of meteors stopped again. During this quite time, the tectonical shift became less common and coral started forming, creating yet more islands.
But life never remains dull. After a few hundred years, the universe decided on a final test for Teolin. Another Meteor swarm started bashing at Teolin. Some colliding with such astonishing power that all that remained after the impact was a circle of new islands, some circling sees as big as 500 miles or more. These circles of islands are always around parts of the oceans that are so deep, nobody seems to be able to measure their dept. Some even claim these holes would take you to the other side of the planet. But not all of these meteors struck as deep as this. Some came in much slower, only creating big tidal waves, but when everything calmed down, part of the meteor would still show as a island. This second group of meteors formed solid islands that usually are rich in all kinds of elements and metals.
What is sure, is that the last meteor to hit Teolin was so massively big, that it managed to throw a large mass of water away from Teolin. Outside the atmosphere of Teolin however, it proved a bit cold for water, so this huge amount of water slowly froze to a large ball. Now the populace of Teolin calls this drop of water Bular, the blue moon.
Besides the moon of Bular, two other moons circle Teolin. First of all, the massive moon of Amber, so called after its color. The populace of Teolin believe this moon has its color because of a fight among the gods Irtolie and Moob-Dhane. The third and last moon to circle Teolin is a rather small moon, believed to be a meteor that nearly hit Teolin, but by a miracle missed it. This moon is called Ghet-Var. Some say that this also has to do with the battle of the two before mentioned gods.
The current situation is that Teolin is a world with many different islands, fairly small to rather large, some flat, some with sharp peeks. Some scattered with caves and holes, others just plain solid. Every island with its own unique flora and fauna and most with only one or two civilized races.
The only thing that remains the same everywhere is the nice weather. Because the polar axis is perpendicular to the plane in which Teolin Circles Larsol, there are hardly any known seasons on Teolin and for the parts that we have navigated, the weather compares to a nice spring day. Calculated in centigrade, the average day temperature is around 15 degrees and the average night will be around five degrees.
The above story is rather a scientific one. On our journey to the south, we also where told a much more romantic or mythic version. If you are interested, you may read it here.
