CONFIGURATION ZONEALARM FIREWALL
-Installation Zonealarm
-Going to the Internet
-Change a program's Internet access permission
-Test your firewall's configuration
- You need a firewall to control the programs and spyware that want to access
the Internet. It works perfectly well against Trojan Horses and makes sure
your computer isn't easily used by a hacker. (source)
- ZoneAlarm is generally considered the best firewall by security-sites, it's free and easy to
configure: www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp
Zonealarm Installation:
1)After downloading you'll first see the "ZoneAlarm installation" screen. Click: "Next"
(If you feel a little more comfortable with computers it's better to install the program
in another directory. So that future Trojans and Worms cannot easily locate the files)
2)Now you're asked for you name and email address, you can give fictitious information here.
You may disable the options: "I want to register so I can download updates."
and "Inform me about important updates and news"
3)Then you're asked for information about yourself, again you can just make something up.
4)Setup is now ready, choose "yes" to start ZoneAlarm right away.
5)In the "Review alert settings" screen you choose: "Don't alert me at all - protect my.
computer silently"
6)At: "Do you want Zonealarm to preconfigure access permission" you choose No.
Now you need to first change some basic settings:
-Click the right-mousebutton on the ZA-icon (in the taskbar) and choose: Restore zonealarm
control center.
-Click "Firewall" in the left-bar, choose: "Advanced" and enable all options except
"Allow uncommon protocols at high security".
- When you access the Internet now, your firewall immediately starts asking
you if you want to permit certain programs to access the internet. Don't worry,
if you make a "wrong" decision you can always change it later on.
Start using the following guidelines:
- 1)A program asks for ACCESS:
Access permission means you allow óne program to communicate with another computer. Don't give
any program "Access" to the internet unless you're absolutely sure the program is safe
and realy needs to contact the internet.
You may click "YES" at your Browser (= mostly InternetExplorer), Antivirus-update program
and Chat- or Emailprogram
2)A program asks for SERVER permission:
Server permission means you allow other computers to communicate with your computer.
Click your mouse-button in the field in front of "REMEMBER THIS ANSWER THE NEXT
TIME I USE THIS PROGRAM". Then click "NO".
WHEN YOU NEED AN OVERVIEW OF THE PERMISSION YOU'VE GIVEN TO
PROGRAMS, OR WHEN YOU WANT TO CHANCE CERTAIN PROGRAMS INTERNET-
ACCESS PERMISSION, FOLLOW THE NEXT STEPS:
-Click the right-mousebutton on the Za-icon (in the taskbar) and choose: Restore zonealarm
control center.
-Click "ProgramControl" in the left-bar, and then click "programs&squot; (beneath the help-icon).
Now you can change Internet-permission by a simple mouseclick on a V, ?, or X-sign.
- WATCH OUT: Zonealarm is a socalled "learning firewall" which means that
when for example permission has been set to V for a long time and now
you want to change it to X, you sometimes need to change this permission
more than 1 time for the same program, because the standard configuration could
be set back to V on your next Computer-session
- 1)At ACCESS you should always see a ? (or an X of course for the programs you've
denied access). But for those people with a family-computer you might want to consider
choosing a V for their Browser, Antivirus-update program and Chat- or Emailprogram.
2)At SERVER you should always see an X. There are some Chat- and emailprograms
that need server permission to work properly, but if it was up to me I'd choose another program.
A few examples:
ACCESS----------SERVER
INTERNET EXPLORER (iexplore.exe)
NETSCAPE (netscp.exe)
OPERA (opera.exe)
?/? or V/V----------X/X
MEDIA PLAYERS (wmplayer.exe/
realplayer/ divx player/ winamp):
-When you don't mind people to
know what you do online:
?/?----------X/X
-When you do mind people to
know what you do online:
X/X----------X/X
As an alternative you can download
the Media to your computer and
watch it there
WHEN YOU'RE USING "KAZAA":
(I'd certainly recommend choosing
kazaa-lite it's faster and ad-free.)
Download from:
version1.7.2 - 2.4.3
link 2
link 3
version2.0
version2.4.0
version2.1
KAZAA-LITE (kazaalite.kpp)
?/?----------X/X
Watch out: When you're using a router to access the Internet the Ip-address of the router is tested

Halfway the page at: ShieldsUp!! Services you choose "Common ports" or "All service ports"
-security.symantec.com (Alse checks for active Trojan Horses)
-www.hackerwatch.org/probe Choose "Port scan"
-scan.sygate.com (Multiple scanning possibilities)
