Introduction
The fishing village is situated at the far end of the Esowista
peninsula close to the Clayoquot Sound bay. The village
has about 1300 inhabitants and is now a favourite holiday
destination at the west coast of Vancouver Island. Whale
Watching excursions are possible from Tofino.
A visit to the Pacific
Rim National Park is also certainly worthwhile. |
History Long time the Nuu-chah-nulth Indians were the original inhabitants of this area. It owed its name in 1792 to the Spaniard, Vincent Tofino de San Miguel. In the beginning of the 20th century there were just a few, not original inhabitants established. After the construction of a church in 1913, slowly but surely more buildings appeared. You could only reach the village by boat until the 2nd World War when a military harbour was constructed. After they constructed roads to the village, the tourism also got going. Fortunately, the beautiful nature of the ancient rain forests has been spared from the cut down of trees. Thanks to the effort of local environmentalists these forests fall under Provincial and National Parks. |
