Introduction The town 100 Mile House is situated in the south of the Cariboo. The 100 Mile House district has a population of around 18,000. In this area there are a lot of possibilities for playing golf, swimming, horse riding and fishing, among others. In the winter it’s a real ski paradise. The most important sources of income are forestry, cattle breeding and tourism. History
In early days the town was called Bridge Creek House
by furriers. This changed after gold was discovered in 1861
at Bakerville. A big flood of gold diggers left from
Lillooet
northwards via the so called Cariboo Trail. Along this
route many hotels, restaurants, ranches and villages appeared. Often these
villages took ther names from the distance in relation
to the starting
|
point Lillooet.
This way, 100 Mile House was named when in
1862 an inn was opened for the gold diggers. You can
see an original post coach at the time of the gold fever at the entrance
of the Red
Coach Inn hotel.
