  HD information

CH.D. means Canine Hip Dysphasia. CHD is a throw congenital- and environmental factors  stated disorder. Most of the times it is inborn but "wrong use" of the up growing dog can this grow worse. The Cane Corso is a fast growing breed,  this means that you have to be careful with the food you give him. In the first year is it not allowed that their is a high level of protein in it. The ligaments  have a hard time to keep up with the fast grow of the bones. You can't allow a faster growing. The young dog mustn't jump and walk stairs until he is one year old. It means for the breeder that he can only breed with dogs who are checked by the W.K.Hirschfeldstichting (now called G.G.W.) or an other  recognized foreign authority. There are five degrees of CHD: CHD free, CHD-Tc (Transisional case), CHD ±, CHD + and CHD ++. In the Netherlands you may breed with CHD - ,CHD- Tc, CHD ± and CHD +, but if one of the parents CHD +, it's recommended that the other one is CHD -, CHD-Tc or CHD ± and the dogs who has CHD + is advised  to check the elbow on dysphasia. This is possible by the G.G.W. (stands for Gedrag, Gezondheid en Welzijn, (W.K.Hirschfeldstichting) but it can also be done by the local vet.

How are hips judged:

Judging the movement of the dog is not enough. You can get more information with a X-ray photo. The dog must be placed on his back with the rear limbs extended and parallel to each other. The knees are rotated internally and the pelvis is symmetric. The dog is normally under full anesthetic, is not necessary for all dogs.

It is important to record on the application form the dogs tattoo and/or microchip number. The photo will be permanently identified with the dogs registration number or name, date of birth, X-ray number, date the photo was taken and the name of the vet or hospital. This all to  exclude fraud.

By the judgment of CHD X-rays, they will pay attention to the shape of the hip sockets and the hip balls, the depth of the sockets and the connection of the hip balls in the hip sockets. Information over the depth of the hip sockets and the hip balls is also available from the "Norgbergvalue", with is  measured on the X-ray photo 1. The Norgbergvalue of the left joint and the right joint will be counted together, and give the "total amount Norgbergvalue" who are stated on the official form. By a normal hip joint the Norgbergvalue is at least 15, the total amount of both hips joint at least 30.

From both hip joints(1), the center is defined and this points will be connected with a line. In both hip joints is, from the middle point a line drawn along the foremost rim of the hip socket (2). The angle (3), who both lines make in the middle of the hip ball, minus 90, gives the Norgbergvalue of the joint. The Norgbergvalue of the left and right joint together, give the "total amount Norgbergvalue" who are stated at the form.

Dogs with a low Norgbergvalue have so shallow hip sockets and or bad junction of the joints. A normal or a even higher Norgbergvalue doesn't mean that the dog has good hip joints. A combination of deep hip sockets and incongruence of the joints or not enough junction of the joints, can even by a high Norgbergvalue give a slightly positive result of CHD. On the form it will be marked as "insufficient" or "bad" junction. You can get also information over the deeply hip sockets by to judge how the center of the hip ball lies in proportion to the foremost  rim of the hip socket. Next to the Norgbergvalue the outcome  will be stated by the presence of "bone-abnormity". There is a direct coupling between seriousness (indicated with 0, 1, 2, or 3) of bone-abnormity and the outcome of the CHD-test. A very light bone disorder (1) leads to CHD-Tc, light(2)  bone disorder leads to CHD ±, and seriouss(3) bone disorders leads to CHD +.

Here can you see a good comparison between a normal hip and a hip with CHD.

The normal hip is on the left site.

The hip with CHD is on the right site.

How CHD is graded:

All information together determines the definitive judgment, by with the unfavorable part will decide. A definitive judgment can be:

CHD- (A) is CHD free or negative: means the dog is X-ray free of CHD, what not means that the dog is no carrier of CHD.

CHD-Tc (B) is a state of transition (transisional case): means  that  on the X-ray little changes are found.

CHD ± (C) is slightly positive: means that there are found clear changes are found, fitting in the clinical picture of CHD.

CHD + (D) is positive: means that there are more clear changes found.

CHD ++ (E) is positive in a very bad way: means that the joints are  in a serious bad shape. As you can see very well on this picture.

When to X-ray ?

In the Netherlands, is the best age for a dog to be X-rayed when he is full-grown.  In the Netherlands it is allowed from 12 month old. A pup is not be born with CHD, but  this illness will be advanced  during growth and proceeds when the dog is getting older. Most of the times it will happen when he is about 18 month.

A possible cure ?

There has been an investigation after a combination of CHD and Vitamin C ( ascorbic acid). The result was that the dogs who got ascorbic acid, not or hardly got CHD. Ascorbic acid is important for a good development of the bones, muscle and blood-vessels and can be an important part in the cure of CHD. Ascorbic acid is a good therapeutic expedient to cure pain and the progress of osteoarthrosis to decrease. Many breeders use all many years ascorbic acid as a prevented mean against the development of canine hip dysphasia for the by then razing puppies.

Ascorbic acid is a fair safe medication, an overdose is, in contrast with other vitamins not possible, because all the ascorbic acid what's not been use by the body will quickly be removed.

Ascorbic acid must be made of vegative sources, on a natural basis, must be acid free. In the U.S.A. Neo-Life imports a ascorbic acid with  is content with the rules above. You can take also an Ester-C. Must be standing on the packing.
