1796

In France the Revolution had created a Republic that was immediately attacked by the surrounding Monarchies. The Habsburg Netherlands were conquered and annexed by France and the Rhineland was also annexed after a brief spell as the “Cisrhenanian Republic” depriving the Empire of large German territories. The Princes ruling there, had lost their lands and, after realising that the lost territories wouldn’t be restored any time soon, were looking towards compensation for them. The obvious candidates to eat away at being the ecclesiastical states of the Empire.

In another two divisions the Kingdom of Poland had now totally disappeared at the hands of Prussia, the Habsburgs and Russia.

Also note the appearance of a “Batavian Republic” in the Netherlands. France had invaded the country and vindicated the revolutionary movement there that had failed at the hands of the Prussians who had intervened on behalf of the Stadtholder.
