Rebecca is the first
wife of Maxim de Winter. She lived at Manderley. She is dead, but she is still
around as the second wife can and will confirm.
The story is told from the point of view
of the second wife after all that has happened; from the first day she met Max
until the last day at Manderley. That fact gives an extra dimension to the
story. Not only do we see what happens, we see what happens through the eyes of
someone how has already lived it and has knowledge of things and feelings she
couldn't have during the period of which she tells.
It is an impressive
story. Du Maurier knows how to create an atmosphere that is ominous, obscure but
lovely at the same time, and she does it with the greatest ease and the littlest
of means.
A very good read
