Work
In the 1970s I worked as a journalist in Amsterdam for Time/Life and the Mirrorgroup, with Friso Endt and later Michael van Os. From 1978 – 1981 I worked as Communication officer with UNICEF in Bangladesh.
In October 2003 the 80-year old Friso, Michael and I met again.
Since 1982 in water, sanitation and hygiene
Since 1982 I work at the IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre. Currently as advocacy, communication and information management and Internet specialist. I edit Source Weeekle and Source Bulletin and maintain the theme page Information and Communication.
I regularly provide infomation, advice and training on social marketing and advocacy communication to developing country partners in water and sanitation.
I also share information and knowledge at international conference and exhbitions.
'Bridigng the knowledge gap' was the theme of our stand at the WaterDome, during the Word Summit for Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, September 2002.
I co-authored a number of books, articles and papers:
- Resource booklet on Communication in Water and Sanitation
- Participatory Approaches to Communication and Training for WSS
- From Electronic Distance Learning to E-learning
- Electronic Conferencing and On-line Dialogue for Development Purposes
- Advocacy and public awareness on sewage management a chapter for a UNEP GPA booklet and CD ROM in 2000
- Developing e-mail and Internet tools for African water managers
