Breeding Info

The word "breeding" is not expressing exactly what we are doing here. Maybe it's better to talk about feline care and pregnancy escort. Perhaps you'll get a better impression then, of what we are doing in our cattery.

Breeding implies more than you would thought it would have: genevariation, health tests, prevention of illnesses, bloodlines and genetic disorders. It is not so, that you bring a tom and a queen together, and get kittens just like that.
In the Netherlands it is allready widely spread among british shorthair breeders to test the bloodgroup. Also a lot of breeders let their cats be scanned on polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and hypertrofic cardiomyopathy (HCM). These tests are not obliged. The tests to detect feline aids (FIV) and feline leukemia (Felv) are obliged.

It is also important to research whether there are genetic problems in the ancestors. What do you really know for sure about their health status? It is greaving that some kittens die from certain diseases that wouldn't have excist, if you as a breeder just investigated more about the health of the ancestors.

When you are a responsable breeder and you did the necessary research and preventive health tests, then you can bring the queen and the tom together. Now the chances are good that they will mate and give birth without problemes that could have been prevented. And now you need to wait. And wait. And then, after nine weeks the kittens will be born. Now they have good chances to grow old without any diseases that

a breeder could have prevented.
