Andrew's Moss Site

The main part of this site is a collection of photographs of mosses. There are about 130 moss photos, and more are being added all the time.

In addition to the photographs, there is a key for identifying mosses, originally based on the field key by Watson (see Acknowlegements) but altered. Note this key is only valid for north-west Europe.

Dreimühlen waterfall, Eifel, Germany

The Driemühlen ('3 mills') waterfall in the Chalk Eifel is a remarkable example of a structure formed by mosses. The chalk-rich water comes out through Crataneuron moss, and chalk deposits are formed on the moss leaves (see microphoto, right). Thse deposits build up and so gradually the waterfall grows. The outer layer is living moss, the inner structure petrified moss.

Specifications

This site is designed for use with a broadband internet connection. Most of the photographs are about 100 kb, which will takes about 15-20 seconds to download through a telephone connection and modem. However, photos displayed on the pages with identification keys are placed at the bottom of the page, so you can use the keys whilst they download in the background.
